Animal Justice Party

Summary

Website: www.animaljusticeparty.org
Social Media: BlueskyFacebookInstagramTwitterYouTube
Previous Names: none
Slogans: Proving that care and compassion aren’t out of fashion – The Animal Justice Party stands for Animals, People and the Planet this Federal Election
Themes: A kinder world, especially for the animals
Upper House Electorates: Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria & West Australia
Lower House Electorates: Adelaide, Blair, Canberra, Casey, Chifley, Cunningham, Dickson, Dobell, Hawke, Hindmarsh, Hunter, Kingston, Lindsay, Makin, McEwan, McPherson, Spence & Wright
Preferences: AJP’s Victoria preferences go to Fusion, Legalise Cannabis, Vic Socialists, the Greens and the ALP, in that order. In SA, the order is similar: Fusion, Greens, Legalise Cannabis, Sustainable Australia and the ALP. Despite running in five other Senate races, no preferences are specified in any of those. Honestly, these are all fairly predictable nominally Left-leaning parties, with the ALP last as a circuit breaker. The high-ranking of Fusion is the only confusing thing here, all the rest seem pretty logical from an AJP perspective.

Sustainable Australia Party

Summary

Website: www.sustainableaustralia.org.au
Social Media: BlueSkyFacebookInstagramLinkedInRedditThreadsTikTokTwitterYouTube
Previous Names: Sustainable Australia Party – Stop Overdevelopment / Corruption & the Stable Population Party
Slogans: DE-CORRUPT POLITICS for a fair and sustainable Australia
Themes: Reduce population growth and re-aligning Australian society more sustainably
Upper House Electorates: Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria & West Australia
Lower House Electorates: none
Preferences: The party’s official position is that they don’t really care who you number 2 or lower, so long as you number them 1. Which is either a fairly realistic assessment of how the preference system now works, or an implicit acknowledgement that no one wanted to do a preference swap with them1Or both, I suppose.

HEART Party

Summary

Website: heartparty.com.au
Social Media: FacebookInstagramTelegramTwitterYouTube
Previous Names: Informed Medical Options Party & Involuntary Medication Objectors (Vaccination/Fluoride) Party
Slogans: Real Change Needs a Brave HEART
Issues at the HEART of All Australians
Themes: Anti-vaccine, pro “natural” therapies, and just a whiff of conspiracy theory.
Upper House Electorates: Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland & Victoria
Lower House Electorates: Bennelong, Canberra, Eden-Monaro & Lindsay
Preferences: The HEART Party is a member of the Australia First Alliance group of far-right parties. Untangling the preference swaps in this Alliance is a nightmare, and Great Australian Party spokesperson William Bay’s accusation that the Libertarians have done secret deals with the Liberal Party has seen several vocal supporters hurrying to Instagram and Facebook to post videos exhorting followers of HP to abandon the Libertarians. At this point, all I can tell you with any certainty is that – inexplicably – HP is advising voters to preference People First ahead of their own candidates.

Australian Labor Party

Summary

Website: www.alp.org
Social Media: FacebookTwitterInstagramYouTube
Previous Names: none
Slogans: A Better Future
Medicare, Childcare, Aged Care, Labor Cares
Themes: We do hold a hose
Electorates: Upper House: All
Lower House: All
Preferences: A mixed bag. Greens get the coveted number 2 spot in most states. Tasmania directs preferences to Jacquie Lambie Network, and ACT to David Pocock. The next preference changes depending on the state: Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party in Victoria; Shooters Fishers and Farmers in NSW; Animal Justice in Queensland, SA, and WA; Greens in Tasmania and ACT; and Liberal Democrats in NT.

Animal Justice Party

Summary

Website: www.animaljusticeparty.org
Social Media: FacebookTwitterInstagramYouTube
Previous Names: none
Slogans: A better world for Animals, People & Planet
Themes: A better world for Animals, People & Planet, with emphasis on the first of those three
Electorates: Upper House: Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and West Australia
Lower House: Bass, Blair, Boothby, Brisbane, Braddon, Casey, Chisholm, Clark, Cooper, Corangamite, Corio, Cowan, Deakin, Dunkley, Fairfax, Fisher, Flinders, Franklin, Grayndler, Herbert, Higgins, Hindmarsh, Indi, Isaacs, Kooyong, La Trobe, Leichhardt, Longman, Lyons, Macnamara, Macquarie, Mayo, Melbourne, Moncrieff, Newcastle, Parramatta, Perth, Petrie, Robertson, Ryan, Shortland, Sturt, Swan, Warringah & Wills
Preferences: Somewhat surprisingly, the AJP’s highest preference goes to the Labor Party. Following them are, in order, are Reason, the Greens, Socialist Alliance and Legalise Cannabis. Unsurprisingly left leaning, although most of the parties in this group put the ALP at #6, not #2.

Sustainable Australia Party

Summary

Website: www.sustainableaustralia.org.au
Social Media: FacebookTwitterYouTubeInstagram
Previous Names: Sustainable Population Party, before that the Stable Population Party
Slogans: Redefining Growth
Themes: Protect our environment. Stop over-development. Stop corruption.
Electorates: Upper House: Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and West Australia
Lower House: Eden-Monaro, Goldstein & North Sydney
Preferences: Sustainable Australia is another party that doesn’t want to suggest how you should direct your preferences. As long as you vote for them first, you can do what you like with the rest of the choices.

United Australia Party

Summary

Website: www.unitedaustraliaparty.org.au
Social Media: FacebookTwitterYouTube
Previous Names: Palmer United Party
Slogans: Save Australia
Themes: Make Australia Great Again
Electorates: Upper House: Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia
Lower House: All
Preferences: There are no surprises on UAP’s Senate How-to-Vote cards. All the parties preferenced are right-wing and either mildly critical of vaccine mandates, or rabidly anti-vax. The Liberal Democrats get the best slot, followed by either Shooters, Fishers and Farmers, Australian Christians, or the Informed Medical Options Party. One Nation is number 4 across the board, followed by the Australian Federation and Australian Values Parties respectively. Curiously, no HTV card was provided for the ACT and NT.

Legalise Cannabis Party

Summary

Website: legalisecannabis.org.au
Social Media: Facebook
Previous Names: Help End Marijuana Prohibition (HEMP) Party
Slogans: Reduce Harm, Create Jobs and Save Money
Themes:
Electorates: Upper House: Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia
Lower House: Longman
Preferences: This party is having no truck with How to Vote nonsense. Its official card advises people to put the Legalise Cannabis Party 1 above the line, and then to select at least six parties of their own choice.

The Greens

Summary

Website: greens.org.au
Social Media: FacebookTwitterYouTubeInstagram
Slogans: The Time Is Now
Themes: Socially progressive, economically left wing, pro-environment. Urgent need for climate action.
Electorates: Upper House: All states
Lower House: Many electorates
Preferences: The preferences of the Greens are fairly unsurprising: a grab bag of other left-leaning parties with the ALP bringing up the rear. In between them, there’s the Victorian Socialists, the Animal Justice Party, Legalise Cannabis Australia and Reason, in that order. It’s not hard to look at that list and wonder if this isn’t organised in increasing order of electabililty, trying to ensure that the preference travels as little distance down as it has to.
